Welcome to the Olympics, where normally useless athletes are celebrated on a world stage and because they are representing their countries that makes them”special”. For a two week span every (now) two years, the sports world begs us to get amped about sports that truly no one cares about. However, this year the United States’s sorrow is at Defcon 5, as the greatest skier ever, Lindsey Vonn, will not make the sacred trek to for the Winter games.
On Tuesday, it was announced World Cup alpine ski racer Lindsey Vonn will miss the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. In November, she retore some ligaments that were surgically repaired from a previous ACL injury. Unfortunately, this latest setback was too much to overcome.
Now, in all seriousness, I’m not belittling the injury Ms. Vonn has gone through or the hard work she dedicates to her craft, but why is her absence a World News story? Why are the 22 minutes allotted to the most important news stories of the day involve a skier not skiing?
I understand Lindsey Vonn, is a successful skier, in fact she won two medals including a gold at the last Winter Olympics, but geez. Do we have to be so obvious we care because she’s hot?
Just so everyone knows, Leanne Smith is still in it, so is Mikaela Shiffrin. Oh, thats right, no one cares. They aren’t smoking and sleeping with Tiger Woods…eww.
One would think the media has more integrity when covering different people. If someone is going to be the focal point of a piece, their appearance should have nothing to do with it. On second thought, we DO operate like that.
