Shhh…it’s a secret.
During the current MLB GM meetings, CBS baseball insider Jon Heyman reported that the Mets secretly met with free agent shortstop Jhonny Peralta. What constituted it as a secret no one knows for sure, but it’s a secret no more.
This year was supposed to be the year the Mets spent major moola after living like paupers since the Madoff scandal they were or weren’t affected by.
But, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson quickly squashed that idea by irking the fanbase with team money jokes and then saying they most likely wouldn’t be signing a $100 million player. Instead, they’re going after Jhonny Petalta.
Yes, Jhonny Peralta.
A 31 year-old career .268 hitter is on their immediate radar. Good news, last year was his best year average wise at .303. Bad news, that figure only represented only 107 games because of his 50-game suspension with his Biogenesis involvement.
So, let’s get this straight. The Mets are building a contender by going after a 30+ guy who’s career average is under .270, and has steroid ties. The incompetence and total lack of awareness constantly floating around Mets brass is astounding.
Unfortunately, that’s no secret.
